Behind closed doors, seated between a white wall and a white table, a woman with no face embodies a serie of threatening sound figures, as many distressing voices that inhabit her. Penetrated by creatures inhabiting tales collective imagination, she becomes the playground and the battlefield of feminine entities fighting over a same territory. Her body, never exposed entirely, is deconstructed, dismantled in a primary and insatiable bestiary, threatening its own sovereignty.
Is she a witch ? A spider-woman, a goddess, a she-wolf or a carnivorous plant ? And will they triumph over the woman they colonised ?
The Magma Chamber is a discourse without words, a cry without voice, that tells us the violences and the ambivalences contained in the archetypes structuring female identity.

Shantala PèPE

Dancer, choreographer and film-maker, Shantala Pèpe founded her company in Brussels in 2015. She is developing her work between stage and cinematic creations.

On an intimate approach, she has been developing her own choreographic work through a serie of solos : the performance Innocence is bliss (10'/2008), Despite Her (50'/2016), Carcan (12'/2017) and the dance-object piece Alice (to be premiered in april 2019). Her interest for both performing and visual arts has led the dancer and choreographer towards acting and filmmaking. She has directed three choreographic films : Emergences (2011) and Embrace (2014), as well as her latest short film The Magma Chamber (2018), all three given awards in international festivals.

Her research, which lies between dance, theatre and cinema, explores poetic and symbolic images, with a strong emphasis on the interaction between the body, the soundscape and the lighting design. The organic origins of the movement, inspired by her fascination with natural worlds, go hand in hand with a graphic and bold aesthetic. The issue of feminine identity and its paradoxes, together with our relationship with the dream and imaginary worlds, are at the heart of her creations.

The combination of her past as a high-performing athlete, a conservatoire training in dance, and numerous collaborations with artists and choreographers has allowed Shantala Pèpe to develop an outstanding onstage presence. She regularly performs in choreographies by Nicole Mossoux (Cie Mossoux-Bonté), Karine Ponties (Dame de Pic) , Isabella Soupart, and most recently, Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh. From 2012 on, she has been training in acting with John Flanders, Beatriz Flores Silva, Marjorie Ballentine, Pico Berkowitch, and has appeared on the screen for several directors.
