Flight for Survival

Mexico
Director: Frederick BERNAS & Amado TREVIñO
5 min. 2013,
with dialogue, Spanish, English subtitled

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, a gravity-defying dance is helping the Totonac people remember their roots.
The “Voladores” of Papantla have been flying high for centuries, seeking to transcend their physical environment, enter a spiritual realm and express love for the natural world.
Produced by Amado Treviño and Frederick Bernas, this multimedia documentary gains rare access to a community striving to preserve its heritage against the odds.

Frederick BERNAS & Amado TREVIñO

A versatile storyteller of all trades, Frederick has directed and produced news pieces, short films and features for the BBC, CNN, Reuters, NBC and others – with a focus on illuminating social or political issues through a cultural lens. His most recent documentary was “Ballet and Bullets: Dancing Out of the Favela,” released internationally by VICE. Five years of reporting across Latin America have taken him to prisons in Mexico, a Japanese colony in Bolivia, the vast favelas of Rio de Janeiro and remote Andean communities. Previously based in Moscow and New York, his writing has been published by AP, The New York Times, The Guardian and Monocle among others. In 2014 he produced “Seizing Solar Power” for Al Jazeera’s “Witness” series with Nico Muñoz. Frederick holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and is currently developing hybrid audiovisual projects which explore the concept of narrative fusion between film and music.

Amado Treviño (1987-2016) was a Mexican photographer and filmmaker who focused on conveying the beauty and importance of his native culture by embedding himself in marginal communities to gain a deeper understanding of their rituals and traditions. He collaborated with media organizations such as TV Azteca, El Mercurio, the BBC and Vice.
