Lucky Day

China, Germany
Director: Dirk SORGE
10 min. 2018,
with dialogue, English

The clips in this video were shot in 2010 with low resolution cameras and served as my personal video diary only. Looking at them eight years later, they become interesting documents in the context of exporting and exposing (foreign) cultures.
When travelling through China, I constantly asked myself: "Is this real or is it fake? Is this the authentic cultural tradition or is it a staging or re-enactment for tourists?" These questions reveal more about my own expectations and categories than about Chinese culture, of course. It is easy to claim "The idea of an authentic culture is a social construct altogether". But what exactly does this mean?
This video collage tries to show how the sceneries collapse and images crumble – to expose even more images. It culminates with the German pop star Sasha on stage at the Expo in Shanghai singing "Lucky Day" on the 3rd of October – the German national holiday.

Dirk SORGE

Dirk Sorge (*1984) works as artist and art educator in Berlin and Leipzig. He studied Visual Art at University of the Arts Berlin (Meisterschüler/MFA) and Culture and Technology Studies (B.A.) and Philosophy (M.A.) at Technical University Berlin.
In his arts practice Dirk Sorge inquires how technological artefacts and digital media shape the way we perceive ourselves and our surrounding. His works include videos, computer programs and mixed media installations. They reveal and deconstruct the aesthetics of pop culture, science and science-fiction. Many of his works involve the audience directly and challenge the notion of authorship.
