We received unusually big number of submissions for the 2019 competition. In the previous years, the film makers of the world sent average 1000 entries from 80-90 countries. It happened only once in the Mediawave history that the number of submissions reached 1800, causing pretty much work to deal with. This year it is twice as big task as it was, however our film staff has been intensively working on handling, displaying and selecting the thousands of entries.
4314 submissions from 117 countries
The sudden increase in submissions made us think about the resons behind. No doubt that it was useful to refresh our old entry system with using other submission sites, like filmfreeway and clickforfestivals.
We wonder if our unique, community-based approach to films and different arts, our huge photo and video documentation and the "opinion" menu on our website might have convinced film makers to submit?
Or probably it was due to this year's theme "RITUALS"? With this special topic, first time this year, we try to unravel our ideas and thoughts on the "fertility or blossoming festival" to reconstruct the ancient traditions of mayfest rather than celebrating the sausage-beer socialist fregments.
So why? We don't know the answer.
You can download the submissions on the bottom of this page in the order of arrival or by countries. It's intersting to check not only which countries sent the most films but also to see the interest from the exotic ones where film industry may not be supported that much.
Some examples: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Chile, Chad, Costa Rica, Etiophia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honodras, Kazahastan, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Myanmar, Tadjikistan, Trinidad, Uruguay, Usbekistan....
We hope that the artistic manifestations of our preffered small cultures keep reaching us in spite of globalisation and after selection, a wider audience will likely enjoy all these advantages.
