MEDIAWAVE International Film and Music Festival

2 - 12 June 2011, Szombathely

MEDIAWAVE Festival – “ANOTHER CONNECTION” expects the applications of artists, whose individual way of creation is independent of fashion streams; for whom technique is the means not the purpose; who attempt to create an individual film code set - whether they live in a minority group or in a less exposed part of the world. We want a festival where an abundance of original, new and particular views will play a major role instead of exotic productions and tricks; where artists with different ways of thinking and free thoughts will come together.
Our geographical borderline situation gives us a chance to consciously mediate between the artistic movements of the Eastern and Western- European region - still rather isolated from each other. Our purpose is not to unify them, but to expose local values and characteristics. On the border of East and West, in the eastern border fortress of the old political and the newest/modern cultural and economical iron curtain, we attempt to reveal the products of modern age migration in film, a program supplemented by other visual performances (theatre, movement theatre, exhibitions) and folk-music, improvised and alternative music concerts.

Film and video programs:
After receiving and previewing the film and video entries, first the preview jury selects the films to be shown at the festival. They also decide whether the films will be screened in the competitive program or in panorame programs.

After viewing the films of the competitive program, the international jury will present one grand prize(independent of category), also category awards (best youth film, best cinematography, best actor, best editor, best sound, etc.). Special awards: award of critics, award of the audience, award of the student jury, etc.

You can enter with films of any of the cateories or genres.
MEDIAWAVE International Film and Music Festival attempts to serve as a scene where you can see and show films which are excluded from the traditional structure of distribution, thus they are rarely shown in cinemas and television, because of their unique and irregular visual world or topic.
Thus the Festival gives an importance and welcome especially:
• features, short fictions and documentary films with uncommon structures, with the emphasis on the image and film realisation, instead of verbalism,
• musical films: associated with jazz, contemporary or archaic folk music, also musical films creatively using or dealing with ethnic-based contemporary or improvised music,
• dance and movement films: inspired by the subjects of dance and movements (with the exception of documentation of these),
• animation films: based on different animation techniques, especially those expanding the limits of animation,
• erotic films: with artistic contents,
• films adapting and comparing East and West European visual and cultural values,
• experimental films which use technics as instruments rather than goals.

- The number of entries and their duration are not limited.

- Please complete the entry form in English or Hungarian only! The entry form should be printed. If you enter more than one film, please use a separate form for each work.
- Entry forms must be completed, uploaded and printed, signed and submitted before 10 January, 2011* along with the following enclosures: Preview DVD; Poster and booklet (if available)

VERY IMPORTANT!!!
For custom reasons, please return the Pro Form Invoice attached to the entry form, along with the preview tape, otherwise we are not able to accept the tape. Please indicate on the form the value of the VHS tape as only 1$(EUR). (It is only a custom value it has nothing to do with the insurance.)

3. Dispatch of the prints (applicable only if the film is selected into any of the screening programs)
- The Festival is not able to pay any rental or screening fee.
- The prints must arrive in Hungary before 15 May, 2011 and must be available for the Festival until 13 June, 2011. The sender should inform the Festival about the way and date the copy of the film was sent, also we need to know the reference or tracking number.
- A pro forma invoice must accompany the print.
- The films must be sent prepaid. The Festival will only pay the return transportation charges.
- All prints will be returned within four weeks after the end of the Festival. If the film has to be returned to a different address, this has to be marked on the application form, as well as the desired date of arrival to the return address.
- Any damage to the film print must be reported to the Festival in writing within two weeks after its return, and before any following screening.

- If the original or an appropriate copy (16 mm, 35 mm, Betacamp SP, dv) of the film selected into the competition program doesn’t arrive in the Festival until 15 May, 2011, we will be able to screen the film on dvd (sent to the preview jury earlier) out of competition! (We are forced to use this method because of several earlier year’s experiences, the prestige of the festival and the fact we cannot change the announced film program after 15 May). Please note the Festival doesn't screen films on HDCAM.

4. Postage – Customs
- On the package of the preview tape please mark: "NO COMMERCIAL VALUE" in order to facilitate custom clearance. It can be mailed by regular post service.

It can result in excessive custom problems, and MEDIAWAVE will not be able to accept those films.
Please mark on package and pro form invoice:
"NO COMMERCIAL VALUE, GOODS ON LOAN FOR FESTIVAL PURPOSES ONLY."
- Film makers from Eastern Europe and Central Asia are requested to indicate on the entry form, how the screening copy will be sent to Hungary, if selected for screening in the Festival program. If postal services are not reliable, please contact the Hungarian embassy in your country.
