MEDIAWAVE International Film & Music Gathering

Fort Monostor - Komárom, Hungary

28 April - 2 May, 2015

MEDIAWAVE Gathering – “ANOTHER CONNECTION” expects the applications of artists, whose individual way of creation is independent of fashion streams; for whom technique is the means not the purpose; who attempt to create an individual film code set - whether they live in a minority group or in a less exposed part of the world. We want a festival where an abundance of original, new and particular views will play a major role instead of exotic productions and tricks; where artists with different ways of thinking and free thoughts will come together.

The Fort Monostor by the river Danube near Komarom ensures the unique athmosphere. In the past three years, we have formed our new location to a globalisation-free bastion protecting / building cinema, different forms of art and the vanishing audience. The fort is with us in our endeavours.

Our geographical borderline situation gives us a chance to consciously mediate between the artistic movements of the Eastern and Western- European region - still rather isolated from each other. Our purpose is not to unify them, but to expose local values and characteristics. On the border of East and West, in the eastern border fortress of the old political and the newest/modern cultural and economical iron curtain, we attempt to reveal the products of modern age migration in film, a program supplemented by other visual performances (theatre, movement theatre, exhibitions) and folk-music, improvised and alternative music concerts.

We call the film makers’ attention that we continue our online festival with the same topic as last year (ON THE ROAD). See the details below! (Click here to see the previous edition.

You can submit to the classic and the online festival on the same entry form. One film can be sent to both.

MEDIAWAVE was born in the times when the collapse of the Berlin wall was in progress in people's heads. The most emblematic wall-breaking of the last century is a good reason to raise the question: why have people kept building walls to separate neighbours, folks and cultures? Talking about walls, beside the Chinese Wall and today’s Palestinian-Israelian wall, the shocking picture of the Central East European roma ghettos also comes to our mind. We also know that these walls are not primarily physical constructions but physical projections of walls in minds. Its sneakest forms are invisible but instantly sensible obstacles in human contacts if we fail to step in the right direction. These imperceptible walls are more harmful and ruin many people’s lives.

We are looking for the different physical and imaginary walls in film art and also building and breaking down in other performances and community actions during MEDIAWAVE 2015 Gathering. (From among the loads of ideas we can reveal that there’ll be EAST and WEST MEDIAWAVE with obviously different selections, red and blue passports and controls.

Constant special themes of MEDIAWAVE 2015

Any films can be submitted which deal with the problems of small nations and other minorities with special regard to European minorities especially the gipsy integration problems and opportunities.

Films, that were once swept away by storms of the history, and were not presented due to isolation, political or economic reasons, or only a limited number of people, but not the general public could have seen them, or were put back into their boxes after a few showings. We are searching for imprints of disappeared worlds, for films preserving their artistic value despite the passing of time.

Online Film Festival

01 Marc - 28 April, 2015

We would like to enhance the spirit of the Gathering with our special On The Road theme. Last year’s ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL was said to be successful: 76 films competed in the international program (3 features, 26 short fictions, 7 animations, 6 experimentals, 17 documentaries, 11 minority and 6 music films). So we decided to announce a classic and an online film festival submission to the film makers of the world.
The award lists of the previous festivals can be seen here

You can submit any films independent from genre, which present ’being on the road’, let it be either a physical or intellectual journey or individuals, communities, minorities travelling temporarily or constantly, from free will or under pressure. Migration, emigration, crossroads or parallel directions, creation processes as well as intellectual or spiritual paths.
For us, it is even more interesting if they avoid the highways of media industry and the colorful boulevards of film market.

In this category, you can send your submission online on the official entry form of the festival by filling the relevant part. See below.

The films submitted in „On the Road” category will be selected by a preview jury by the end of January 2015. The films in the program then will be available on the website of the festival between 1 March and 28 April. After watching the films, we would like the online audience to vote for
- the best film
- the best cameraman
- the best actor/actress
- the most beautiful road
- the hardest road
- the strangest road

Voting deadline: 31 March 2015
The voters can win festival passes and presents that fits the festival spirit.

The selected films will be evaluated also by a professional jury. You can watch the results of both evaluation in the screening rooms of the festival and the winner artists will be awarded by unique prizes reflecting the spirit of the category.

You can enter with films of any of the cateories or genres.
MEDIAWAVE International Film and Music Festival attempts to serve as a scene where you can see and show films which are excluded from the traditional structure of distribution, thus they are rarely shown in cinemas and television, because of their unique and irregular visual world or topic.
Thus the Festival gives an importance and welcome especially:
features, short fictions and documentary films with uncommon structures, with the emphasis on the image and film realisation, instead of verbalism,
musical films: associated with jazz, contemporary or archaic folk music, also musical films creatively using or dealing with ethnic-based contemporary or improvised music,
dance and movement films: inspired by the subjects of dance and movements (with the exception of documentation of these),
animation films: based on different animation techniques, especially those expanding the limits of animation,
 erotic films: with artistic contents,
films adapting and comparing East and West European visual and cultural values,
experimental films which use technics as instruments rather than goals.
